Heidi Mendez, AMFT

Heidi Mendez is an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT) #117564, under the supervision of Dr. Jolee Brunton. In 2018 she received her master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from University of Phoenix. Undergraduate studies were in Criminal Justice. Associate Mendez’s clinical experience includes having provided clinical services to children, youth and their families enrolled in the County Office of Education – Juvenile Court and Community Schools (JCCS) district and specified San Diego Unified School District Schools. Heidi has worked within the juvenile detention facilities in San Diego County in a sworn capacity with adolescents in detention conducting counseling and rehabilitation services. Heidi also has family law enforcement involvement and experience of over twelve years.

Selection of therapy that is fitting for the client at the stage of life they may find themselves, is very important. Heidi also draws from various through evidence-based treatment interventions, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), and other therapeutic approaches in her work. Heidi provides services like child, family, and couples counseling. Other treatment interventions provided for children include individual, play, and family therapy. Areas of focus with children include blended families, anxiety, depression, behavioral difficulties, and the grieving process involving the loss of a family member. She also provides psychoeducation to parents about childhood disorders and how to communicate with community programs available to families.

Heidi has also worked with individuals and groups utilizing her bilingual and bi-cultural background. To which she works with the client on exploring the current perspective of themselves and identify a process that will facilitate metamorphosis. Every individual is their own expert and knows what their lens of life is (personally, professionally, and spiritually). In turn, therapy is a collaboration between the clinician, client(s), and other community resources. The client becomes empowered by having obtained through the therapeutic process the necessary information, tools, and skills needed for their self-discovery.
